I built an ai startup, got paying customers—then made it free because it felt like a scam
A few months ago, I launched my first AI startup, AppScriptor. It was an AI-powered tool that could generate mobile apps automatically. At first, I was thrilled—I got a lot of reactions, paying customers, and people excited about the idea. But the more I worked on it, the more I realized a major flaw: real-time app previews were nearly impossible. Users wanted instant updates and fast iterations, but the technology just wasn’t there yet.
I felt guilty charging people for something that wasn’t delivering the experience they expected. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good enough. I didn’t want to keep collecting payments while knowing I couldn’t improve it quickly enough—so I made it completely free. Eventually, I shut it down.
That experience taught me a crucial lesson: people don’t just want an MVP; they want something useful. That’s why I built StarterPilot—an AI-driven platform that helps entrepreneurs validate ideas, generate branding assets, and build landing pages effortlessly. This time, I’m making sure it actually delivers.
What’s the hardest part of launching a startup for you? Would love to hear your experiences!
